A tidy strip at the back of the underwear seems to be designed to rub against the delicate skin, which can be damaged by constant rubbing. Besides, statistics suggests that women wearing g-strings run a greater risk of injuring their genitals during a fall or traffic accident.

Yes, yes, yes, there is the Box. But, even five minutes ago, when everyone was apparently sitting atop a hillock of gold coins like Scrooge McDuck, a night at the Box was a quicker way to become a pauper than investing with Bernie Madoff.

Where, one often wondered, were the charming bolt-holes of yesteryear? Why was it so tough to find any place half as fun as the Mudd Club was in its heyday or Jackie 60 or the Pyramid. At those spots it was often the exuberance (largely chemically induced) of the clientele, the rampant exhibitionism (and lack of a day job) that infused the proceedings with energy and blurred the boundary between night and day.

If you were lucky enough to follow the fashion circuit to Europe, you knew places like that still existed in London and Paris (although not Milan; never Milan). Until the recent demise of BoomBox, London clubgoers still smeared their faces with lipstick, in the manner of the late Leigh Bowery, got up in clown drag for a night of flailing in a magical free-entry East London dive that was a playpen for all buzz names of London fashion: Gareth Pugh, Kabir, Cassette Playa, et al.

“BoomBox reminded people it’s fun to dress up,” Richard Mortimer, the impresario behind that club, once told me, adding that, while he admired people with good taste, “I admire people with bad taste as well.”

Transformed into a movable party called PonyStep, BoomBox recently exported its show to Paris, where it staged one-night wingdings at Le Baron, a former bottle-bar turned into every fashion designer’s favorite boîte.

And that is where New York Fashion Week comes into things, because, in an unusual counter-invasion, the promoters of Le Baron blew into Manhattan for three recent nights, along with the promoters of the vaunted French club, Club Sandwich, and another, known as Rendezvous Paris-New York. They were here to plant freak flags on alien soil.

On Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Le Baron set up at the Bowery Hotel for parties sponsored by Belvedere vodka. With brazen political incorrectness, the promoters invited “homeless people, starving artists, lonely rich people and international superstars” to hop around to music by James Murphy, Mark Ronson and Paul Sevigny.

“I don’t want anyone to think we are entrepreneurs of the night,” said Olivier Zahm, editor of the cult magazine Purple and a host of Le Baron, which he started several years back with the artist and the D.J. André Saraiva. “It’s not business oriented.”

Le Baron became a fashion destination when Mr. Zahm and Mr. Saraiva, looking for a place to hang out with pals like Carine Roitfeld and Lou Doillon, cut a deal with a swank Parisian bar that had lost business to the rise in online sex.

“All these clubs were like a little place where the girls were dancing in front of you for a bottle of Champagne,” Mr. Zahm said. “Now, if you’re a C.E.O. and you want a girl, you don’t go to a bar. You dial the Internet.”

The club’s owners were only too pleased to have Mr. Zahm and his cohort pump cash into their flagging business. Thus Le Baron became the place for Nicolas Ghesquiere and others of his chic ilk to hold their post-show celebrations. Why not? The bar is so dated it is cool. Its postage-stamp dance floor makes bar dancing inevitable. Its many nooks encourage ... uh, intimacy.

“There is a sexual vibe, but in a nice way,” said Mr. Zahm, who is 45 and whose ever-present nimbus of cigarette smoke, oversize aviators and unruly mop lend him some resemblance to a Godard character redrawn for a graphic novel by R. Crumb. “It’s small, it’s friendly and that’s all. It’s like it’s in your home.” This is only true if Hugh Hefner is your dad.

Unlike Le Baron, which aims for intimacy, Club Sandwich always looks to go big. In Paris last season, for instance, the promoters Marc Zaffuto and Emmanuel d’Orazio took over Maxim’s, the Rue Royale nightclub behemoth, and packed it with a crowd that caused one to think of the bar scene in “Star Wars” as directed by Jack Smith. There were leather daddies on the ground floor, drag queens on two, hairy-shouldered bears perched on gilded ballroom chairs. On the top floor, Hamish Bowles, an editor at Vogue, spun in solitary circles to Sylvester’s “You Make Me Feel Mighty Real.”

The women, like the men at Club Sandwich, observed a dress code favoring jumpsuits, velvet knickers, underwear worn as outerwear and short-short tennis ensembles that seemed to suggest Rod Laver imagining he was Billie Jean King.

If the Club Sandwich scene at the Norwood club on Sunday did not quite attain the heights (or depths) of fashion typical of the Paris original, it surely came close. (Think chain mail.)

“We brought it here for the same reason we started it in Paris,” said Alex Malgouyres, the D.J. (whose day job is as Burberry’s public relations director in the United States). “My friends and I were not going out anymore because we didn’t like the music anywhere and we didn’t like the crowds.”

The idea behind the imported Club Sandwich, he went on, “is that it’s not just house music, or just rock, it’s everything. It’s not just one type of people, it’s mixed. It’s like a club of, whoever you are, a transvestite, a gay boy, a straight boy or girl, whatever, who cares?”
